Britain could start withdrawing troops from Iraq in March 2009 and most will have left by June, reports said today, while the British Ministry of Defence confirmed it plans to cut troops from early next year. From a peak of 46,000 British soldiers in 2003 when Britain joined the invasion, just 4,000 remain in Iraq and the majority are currently confined to the Basra base.

A Viking BVS10 All Terrain Vehicle (Protected) (ATV(P)) crosses the barren desert landscape of Helmand province in Afghanistan. Soldiers from the Viking Squadron, The Queen's Royal Lancers crewed the all-terrain vehicles from Forward Operating Base Inkerman which is in the Upper Sangin Valley (Green Zone) to Camp Bastion, the trip took twenty five hours. The Queen's Royal Lancers are providing Viking crews for Operation Herrick 8 and 9. The VIKING BVS10 All Terrain Vehicle (Protected) ATV(P) is the third generation of articulated vehicles produced by BAE Systems Hagglunds of Sweden. The VIKING is a follow on from the BV202 and the BV206. The Viking is an amphibious vehicle deployed via landing craft from ship, it's also fully air transportable by C130 Hercules or under slung by Chinook helicopter.
